We developed a participatory design process that involved the community. In total, 40 people from different institutions, public and private, took part in participatory workshops for 3 days. One of the most important results was the development of design strategies that encourage citizen engagement and participation, institutional alliances and an understanding of the context and its tangible and intangible virtues.

we built a proposal based on: (i) understanding that design should increase the potential of the coastal front, understanding the place as a public and historical space that is built from the knowledge of citizens. (ii) Restructure the way in which the urban development of the city has linked both sides of the river and (iii) generate strategies that can articulate technical solutions with ecological elements, public space and socio-economic development.

We proposed new ways in which a retaining wall could become a public space and a reconnection area between citizens and the river. Thus, this urban element of environmental control and prevention is transformed into a catalyst for social interaction. As well we proposed new physical elements that would achieve connectivity, economic and social development, ethnic diversity and functionality.

Also, we developed a visual identity and a memory archive that could highlight the historical importance of the downtown and the riverside in order to reconnect citizens with the urban elements that build their city. By generating an identity, the dynamism and vitality of the space is maintained, as well as the special feeling of the people who inhabit it.

creating a series of postcards with different spaces and urban elements located along the edge of the river, elements with special importance in the development of the city throughout history. Aditionally, we developed a web page that would allow (i) include the inhabitants of Paramaribo in the renovation project of the historic center and (ii) create a communication channel between the citizens and the institutions that participate in the project.
