Big drop in EU architects registering in the UK | News

According to newly released ARB committee papers, the board has only processed 485 applications via the EU route between 1 January and the end of July, compared with the 846 registering during the same period in 2016.

The figures appear to show a marked drop in enthusiasm from European architects to move to the UK since it voted for Brexit in June 2016.

The board also recently reported a ‘marginal increase’ in EU qualified architects resigning from the register. In 2016, 28 per cent of resigning architects were of EU nationality (other than UK) against 33 per cent in 2017.

By contrast, the number of certificates issued by ARB which would potentially allow a UK architect to register in Europe has increased by 16 per cent since 2017, with 114 being issued from January to July 2018, against 98 in the same period of 2017.

This is up from 56 in the same period in July 2016, an increase of 104 per cent.

The register as of 27 August 2018 stood at 40,824, of which 8,388 are EU nationals.

Only 19 architects resigned from the register between 1 January and 9 August 2018, which the ARB said makes it difficult to assess any trends among EU nationals.
